Green Smoothies are all the rage at the moment and with good reason too, as they are an excellent way to get good nutrition in an easy few minutes, and all in one glass! They can easily fill in some of our modern day nutrition conundrums of needing to eat more greens and fruit. Sounds pretty good right? Absolutely! But do you know you can take your magnificent smoothie to the next level of absolute radiance? Superfoods are the answer my friend. Adding Superfoods to your Smoothie will up the nutritional component dramatically.
Superfoods are organic, raw and exceptionally nutritious foods – As David Wolfe puts it “They are a class of the most potent, super-concentrated, nutrient-rich foods on the planet”. And therefore for the sake of health are the perfect touch to a smoothie and should be a part of your every day diet.
Some of the best Superfoods to add to your smoothies are:
Cacao, raw chocolate in its original unprocessed state. Cacao contains the highest level of antioxidants of any foods, the most concentrated source of magnesium, Iron, Chromium, Manganese, zinc, copper, vitamin C, Omega-6 fatty acids and so much more. It is an excellent source of antioxidants, minerals and supports neurotransmitter function.

It contains all eight essential amino acids and eighteen amino acids in total, vitamin A, B1, B2, B6, E and K. It is a incredible source of chlorophyll, salts, enzymes and phytonutrients. Spirulina has potent immune-enhancing properties, promotes detoxification and overall health and wellbeing.
Chia seeds, are loaded with plant based omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, protein and antioxidants. As they absorb liquid they secrete a demulcent anti-inflammatory gel, causing them to become gelatinous. Chia seeds are easier to digest then flax seeds and don’t contain any phytoestrogens. They also have higher zinc and lower cadmium levels then flax, which is ideal. These are the perfect addition to any smoothie, especially if you like yours thick.

Here is a basic superfood smoothie recipe that I make every day. I do make variations of this and feel free to experiment and tweak it to your liking.
- 1 tbsp raw Cacao powder
- 1/2 tbsp Maca
- 1tbsp Chia seeds
- 1 tbsp Hemp seeds
- 1 tbsp Spirulina powder
- 1 frozen bananas
- Reishi mushroom extract
- Milk thistle extract (tincture form)
- 1 tbsp Lucuma powder (optional)
- Stevia or local raw organic honey (to desired sweetness)
- Spring water
- Ice cubes (optional)
Add all ingredients to a high speed blender and serve immediately.
